DAVID Ellis had his eye on his future wife when they were in the infant class at Wyke together.

It was a few more years though before Peggy realised David was the man for her.

But as they look back on 50 years of married life together they both agree they made the right choice.

The couple, who live in Granny Hall Lane, Brighouse, celebrated with a meal for family and friends at the Shibden Mill Inn, Stump Cross, Halifax.

"We have known each other since our early school days," said David. "But while I remember Peggy she doesn't have any real recollection of me. I can remember when she was May Queen."

They are both enthusiastic about amateur theatre which also goes back to their childhood days. Peggy was a member of the choir at the Wyke Gospel Temperance Hall and she took part in their annual pantomime. David was also involved with productions and the couple had the same circle of friends. They continued their education at different schools in Bradford but travelled on the same bus

"As we grew up we went out in a foursome but Peggy was with the other man who was actually May King at school when Peggy was May Queen. One night I walked her home and she realised she wanted to be with me. Thankfully the other man understood and he ended up being our best man!" said David.

The couple, who are both 72, were married at St Mary's Church, Wyke, and spent the early part of their married lives in Wyke. They moved to Brighouse and lived in Bracken Road before moving to Fixby in 1987. Last September they came back to live in Brighouse.

"It's lovely to be back. We feel part of the community here," said Peggy.

They became actively involved with the former Brighouse Children's Theatre when their three daughters Caitlin, Suzanne and Maxine joined the group. David eventually took over as chairman and he recalled the days when the Children's Theatre presented popular shows at the Rydings Hall in Brighouse. Peggy helped out with costumes and wherever else she was needed. Through the Children's Theatre they became involved with the former Brighouse Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society. Over the years they have appeared in many productions with BAODS and the former Brighouse Light Opera Society
